Screaming Lagotto in car 2010/02/18 01:16 Karma: -1
Hi folks,

I offer a link to a mp3 file, that records my Lagotto screaming with excitement. He is "SuperSonic" in name and volume! I have a solid plastic travel crate that I place on the back seat of my car. My Lagotto gets so excited that he screams, yelps and makes so much noise that concentrating on the road is difficult.

To date; we have tried to talk to him - to calm him down, scolded him for being bad, covered his crate with a blanket, sprayed him with water, all of which worked - but only for a few days.

At the moment the only way we can stop him yelping is to take him for a walk before we take him in the car for a walk!

Although I have found that playing this mp3, on CD in the car, shuts him up. But, clearly this means we are hearing the same thing, albeit at a thankfully lower volume

All ideas and suggestions are most welcome.

Hi,
I have a thought, what if when he starts to fuss in his create you quietly take him back inside and ignore him till he settles, put him back on lead when he has calmed down, go back to the car and into the create, the second he fusses calmly take him out and back to the house and ignore him till he settles,be prepared to keep repeating this until he gets the idea that fussing means no car ride or walk.
This method worked with Charlie when every time I picked up the lead he wanted to play chase,so I would put down the lead and walk away, wait for him to settle and then repeat the process,he worked out very quickly he was not going to go walking if he didn't come and sit for me, there very clever puppies
Hope this is a help, good luck,
Marianne and Charlie

Hi Mark
What a nightmare for you. Archie (SuperSonic's brother) yodels in the car but only when he gets close to somewhere he knows .. i.e. the park! Nothing like that volume though. I think mlogan's advice is spot on. If Archie's playing up (which he can do often) I simply stop what I was doing with him and walk away. If he's acting up outside (ie. stalking me) then I stop and then turn my back on him. It usually works and he's certainly getting better at responding to commands the older he gets.
You have my sympathy though ... that lagotto yodel is ear piercing. I'm told that their voice/bark will break at 18 months ... here's hoping.
Regards

OK so I tried this approach with some success. But when we get the final run up to the park, he feels the speed bumps on the road and goes ballistic. I did stop, get out and walk away, but he continued. I suppose I could have left him longer but he was creating so much noise that (as it was very late at night) I saw some lights coming on at houses nearby and them wondering (I wondered) what the hell was going on!)

So I relented.

But progress is being made. Thank you all for the suggestions.

Oh dear,he is going to make you work hard.
I'm not sure but I think that as soon as he starts you will have to turn around and go home,if he settles before you get home you could try going back to the park but if the speed hump gets him going, just head back home. You may just have to keep going over that hump every day until he works out that fussing means he has to go without what HE wants, the reward of going to the park and he will just have to settle for a walk around the block or some inside work. I'm still learning myself so if I've got this wrong someone please jump in,but one thing I do know you must stay calm and be clear and consistent.
Stay the course,
M & Mr C
